These days, the most successful black girl artists don't escape those 3 genres. Some men are pursuing other categories and are selling records, but not the women!

That's a really stupid question especially since you can't sing "rap" and you really can't sing hip hop either. Even when a black female artist sings a r&b song it somehow ends up a pop song. That's what the artists like to sing. That's like asking why dosn't Madonna do a gospel album.

Let's see, I have a cousin who sings country. Jada Pinkett sings rock/metal/whatever, no matter how bad she may sound. There are black singers who do opera, gospel, pop, plenty of other genres. A lot of them just aren't as well known as the r&b/hip hop artists, probably since this generation is so into hip hop.

Those are the genre's that most black female artist have grown up with in their homes and communities, therefore many FEMALE artist feel as though they can advance in those genre's. If you see a black man rockin ti out on stage thats cool, if you see a black GIRL rockin ti out on stage people might think she wa son something....haha. I think it would be difficult for a black female artist to "fully" break into country or rock, but with that said many of the songs sung by them are in fact rock songs, feature rock artists, or incorporate beats from other genre's of music. As a black woman i listen to everything ( except country and hard metal) and would love to see a black female artist top the rock charts!

Mirah Carey is pretty successful and I don't think her music is all hip hop. They most likely go where the $$$ is just like the guys. I am sure with all the talent out there, it isn't easy crossing over to another category. Besides, most of these folks we see are "handled" by someone who tells them what to do.
