Because Materazzi made some rude comments that crossed the line. Something about Zidane's mother or sister being terrorist whores, or similar. In my opinion, had Zidane's swinging arm not been injured in a previous play, he should have knocked Materazzi's block clean off. In my book Zidane is still one of the best players ever, and should be respected as such. Everybody needs to vent or defend their convictions at some point, unfortunately for Zidane it came in the World Cup final, and in his last few minutes as a professional soccer player.
