I think you're just hogging time on the PC.
Log off and let her use it.

No unless you have a very old computer OR if your computers RAM is used up OR if you have a very slow internet connection to begin with those are the only things that would make the IM system slower.

Yes, but it's negligible. Any program that the computer is accessing or has stored in its RAM is "slowing" your computer down.

Computer Slow
Download and then run startup.exe at:
http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml......
Can't live without it and windows...
Then disable and/or uninstall whatever u don't need.
Other things to try:
1 - Disk Cleanup (removal of temp files, cookies, etc.)
2 - Defrag
3 - Registry Cleanup (CAN BE VERY RISKY!)
