laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest desktop on the market,

the best way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are online.

these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do, such as rent and a employees etc. as you know most online shops have rather competitive prices sometimes cutting the laptop price to a half.

one such website for laptop computers is :

first off, get more ram. 256 is the minimum you should be running XP on. second it might be better if you got an AMD based laptop (instead of the pentium, get an athlon or turion) it will keep the heat down, give you better battery life, and prolly more power for the dollar, as well as being less expensive. the only reason you should get intel is for the core duo processor. also if you store music or videos or do anything other than word processing and surfing the internet, you might want a bigger harddrive.

to access the internet wirelessly, you will need to have a wireless card in your computer. i believe (i might be wrong on this one point) that all centrion notebooks are wireless ready, anything else, you will know by if it has 802.11 a b or g these are the wi-fi standards. you can only use that if there is wireless internet avaiable. so you prolly woun't get it on the highways most of the time. there are many spots in cities where you can acces it, and if you want it at home, you will need a wireless broadband router (about $40)

First check if it already has a wireless device integrated.

If your laptop doesn't have a wireless device AND you want to go "virtually anywhere and access the internet without plugging into anything" buy a wireless adapter for USB or PCcard like the "LINKSYS WPC55AG 802.11a/b/g Dual Band Wireless LAN PCMCIA Card" that let you use any of the available band ("A", "B" or "G"). That isn't cheap becaue it is $79.99. For a cheaper option look for any Wireless adapter (USB or PCcard) that says "b/g" at least because those are the most common ways for wireless networking; the "a" its newer and faster but less common.

if you virtually want to get internet access anywhere even if there is no wifi signal around you will need get to get a Wireless Aircard Modem which comes with a service fee. Check the site to see what I'm talking about. Couple of vendors offer it. Like Cingular and Sprint.

To get wireless virtually anywhere, you need to get with your cell phone company and find out what they offer. There are wireless cards that run off of cell signals that you can use anywhere you have cell service. Most companies offer the service now.
