A paint is a breed. To be registered it must come from paint,Qh or TB Parents.
Pinto is mostly considered a half breed as it ican be made up of different breeds and has color. For example if I bred an Arab to a registered paint and the foal was colored I could register it with the pinto horse association but not the APHA
In short both have to have color(unless it is a breeding stock paint which are solid colored).Paints can only be from a 3 breeds where as pintos can be from just about any breed and can be registered in the pinto horse association.

People should not answer unless they KNOW for sure what they are saying!!

Both are breeds, and pinto is also a color. Paint is also used to refer to the pinto coloring, but the American Paint Horse Association registry requires bloodlines and height requirements. The Pinto registries also register ponies, and register by color patterns.

Pinto is Spanish for the word "paint."
A registered Paint horse is over 14.2 hands and has registered parents -and can be solid colored, which is referred to as "breeding stock" because it can be used to produce a patterned (spotted) foal.

actually, a lot of people will have different answers for this. While there is both a paint horse association and a pinto horse association, some people beleive they are only colors. Paint horses are actually quarter horses so its not REally its own breed, some people say. and pintos are crosses so its not its own breed.... but others say, arent all breeds a cross of something? like a morgan came from crosses of arabians and warmbloods, so a quarter horse paint could be a new breed altogether, right? it is a big confusinjg opinion debate. heres what wikipedia says:

pinto is just a color - paints are a breed - this is from APHA

American Paint Horses have strict bloodline requirements and a distinctive stock-horse body type. To be eligible for registry, a Paint's sire and dam must be registered with the American Paint Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, or the Jockey Club (Thoroughbreds). At least one parent must be a registered American Paint Horse. To be eligible for the Regular Registry, the horse must also exhibit a minimum amount of white hair over unpigmented (pink) skin.

I think Pinto is a horse name, usually their colors and marking are like brown with socks and a star... It could be that a Pinto is a breed and that breed just generally comes in the smae colors, so some think it is a color, but I am pretty sure it's a breed.

Choice, versatility and achievement for the breed that offers something for everyone is what the Pinto Horse Association has to offer. The association was formed in 1956 although the bloodlines of many Pintos trace three or four generations before that date. Established primarily as a color registry, today, the association has grown to offer four conformation types. In addition to the four types of horses, PtHA has a separate division for Ponies (measuring over 34" at maturity but not to exceed 56" at the withers), Miniatures (not exceeding 34" at maturity) and Mini "B" (those exceeding 34" up to and including 38").

Two patterns are recognized by the PtHA: Tobiano and Overo. A Breeding Stock Division is offered for solid colored horses or horses with insufficient color to be placed in the color classification and/or horses with documented and registered color in their pedigree or horses with two or more Pinto characteristics. Four square inches of cumulative white is all you need to register your horse in the Pinto Horse Association (three inches for ponies and two inches for minis.) (PtHA does not accept animals crossed with or showing evidence of Appaloosa, Mule or Draft horse breeding).

They are both breed names. Paint is a quarter horse/paint cross. Pinto is anything else crossed with a paint.

they are breeds. paint horses can only be Qh's or throughbreds and their parents must only be also., pinto's are any other breed that has color....if that makes sense. if not go to APHA.com for paint horses and ptha.org for pintos and it will explain in detail.
