As an American, I must admit that the italians are fantastic footballers. They have gotten to the finals and semi-finals many times in their career. I think their team was obviosly the best this year and I am happy that they won. If they didn't beat the French the U.S.A. most certainly would have. In or out of soccer.

First off, the US would not have been able to beat the French; the US team is just so overrated (this coming from an American): we are certainly not the 5th team in the world; after all the FIFA ranking doesn't mean anything. Italy is an excellent DEFENSIVE team, probably the best defensive team, mostly because they can regroup and defend with 11 men so quickly and have the necessary aggressiveness. I don't think this makes them a GREAT team all around. A great team needs to have a good defense, mid-field and attack. Italy's mid-field is average and their attack is completely non-existant: they score most goals on set pieces or counter-attacks. A good attack is capable of scoring with the flow of the game through a thick defense, not thanks to corners or free kicks: any team can do that. Brazil is just the opposite; their mid-field and attack are excellent, but their defense is crap and always has been. Nevertheless, I prefer to see an excellent, entertaining attacking team rather than a boring, dull, lifeless defensive team. Actually, I hope teams will one day return to the 4-2-4 format with 4 strikers, instead of the nonsense lone striker in front. As far as scoring, I don't think any team in the World Cup had only their "stars" scoring; goals came from alot of different players in each team. The reason for that is simple: the stars are heavily defended and contained by the opposing defense, making it easier for "regular" players to score. Also, most of the attacking stars are that "lone" striker. Obviously, the lone striker attacking format is downright wrong. I think the best team this year was Germany and to some extent Ghana. Both these teams impressed me far more than the Italians.

I think they are a great team :)

and to the person who asked why Americans didn't want France to win, I'm not quite sure, but I can tell you that I live in a french Canadian province, and 3/4 of the french people here were rooting for Italy which really shocked me...

Italians *are* great footballers (hey, don't let Materazzi fool you people), thanks ;-)

So are the French, though. They just won one World Cup, but they got very close one more time on Sunday and have talented players too. Just out of curiosity, why are some Americans so happy that France didn't win? Is it because they didn't join the war in Iraq? I'm Italian and don't get it...

Italy is the best team in the world. They have the best players in the world and the best defence in the world. Their obviously better than Brasil and after the world cup they showed that no team can stop them. To all the Italian fans I say FORZA ITALIA.

I'm Italian and I agree. :) But I completely appreciate that you're willing to say that. So many other people are calling us cheaters and saying we didn't deserve it. SOme people have said that we suck at football. But they worked hard and they made it. I would never usually admit this, but I think USA put up quite a good fight. :)

yeah i somehow agree.

i noticed none of the italian player has a HUGE name compare to zidane, figo, shevchenko, or whoever it is who's won a golden ball award before.

because they play as a team. not as an individual.

the italians managed to score 12 goals from 10 different players. and that's what i think missing from the other teams, playing as a team.

Not really. They won this time because they are the lucky ones. Maybe next time, they would lose. That's just football, great players won't always win the game.
