For all species of turtles and tortoises, males have thicker and longer tails because they store their penis inside. The thing is that for each species they have different tail lengths and sizes; so it is all relative. In some species the male's tail can be 3-4" while in others it is just a stump. You need to compare the sexes with the sames species.
There are secondary sexual characteristics, but these may be unreliable. In some turtle species, the females are larger in over all size. Some aquatic turtles, cooters, sliders, maps, and painteds, the males will have longer front nails. In some tortoises and box turtles, the males will have a slightly concaved plastron. Some male box turtles may have red eyes, but all these are secondary ways to sex it and my not be totlly accurate compared to the tail.

I do know how on water turtles, The male has long toenails on the front feet. The female has short nails.

They say that the male has a little groove on the underside of his shell. The female fits under the groove.Hope it helps...
