Please follow this path. click on messenger> my contact details> make changes in ur nickname box> keep other boxes empty> save and close. It will solve ur problem.
If u r having yahoo 360 also. Then u will hv to do the following also. Follow this path. Open ur messenger window> contacts> my profile> click on ur ID> edit>it will take u to ur 360 page> click settings> it will take u to basic info> make changes in Name and Nick Name as u need> make changes in Yahoo Identity display> save.

Before you enter the chatroom there is a box that say's "Enter Chatroom As__________ . If you have more than one profile then you will be able to open the drop down box and select the profile you want to use. If you do not have but one profile then you will have to back up and make yourself another. To do this you just open sign in to messenger and click on the messenger tab at the top then click on "my profiles", then click on "create\edit my profiles". From here you can make yourself be anybody you want to be!

There's two meanings you may have - your actual ID, and the name that shows up.
For the actual ID - make an alias (it's like a new ID, but no e-mail address. Check under "Account Options".
For the name that shows up - go to your profile (profile.yahoo.com/yourname) and click the edit link that best describes what you need.

you can't change the id but you can switch to one of the five aliases for that id. to make aliases go here http://profiles.yahoo.com/
to change ids you have to log out of that account and log back in again in the other account. the reenter chat
