I have heard from several EMT's that this does happen.

However, with my labors that were inducted - this was the first question that the nurses asked "did you poop today?" and if you wish, they'll either give you a suppository or an enema so you poop before you give birth.

One of my children wasn't induced. And I did not poop. I never have.

The reason why women poop when they give birth, is because they feel like they have to "push with both" - and sometimes, they do poop.

Poop Yourself

I never had a BM with my kids, I was asked if I had one before I was admitted if not they would have given me an enema. I had a friend who pushed so hard to get the baby out she pooped. That is normal when giving birth and nothing to be ashamed about.

Some women do, but not all of them. I kept telling the doctors that I thought that I had pooped but they kept telling me that I didn't. I was so worried about that before giving birth.

LOL! Yes, it is very common to have a BM while giving birth. Same muscles used to push out a baby are used when you have a BM. It's nothing to be embarrassed about, the nurses just clean you up and you keep pushing. Trust me, you're in so much pain you really don't care!

I'm afraid it can happen, yes! But if you ask for something to make you go before full labour develops then you can minimize the risk!

You know - when I was giving birth to my daughter, one of the midwives even whispered into my ear "Pretend you are doing the biggest poop you ever did! - Go on girl, shi* a brick!". So that first answerer doesn't know what they are talking about!!

Having given birth, i will honestly say that yes, a small amount of fecal matter will come out from all the pushing. The nurses quickly whisk it away and no big deal is made out of it to cause embarassment for you. Trust me, it's one of the last things on the mind of a woman who is in the middle of giving birth.

Most of the doctors will order an enema for you that is given soon after you get to the hospital if you are in real labor. This will prevent the pooping while you are delivering.

Most women do not eat much in the few days before delivery because they are so uncomfortable and don't have much in them anyway. Don't worry if it happens, believe me, the docs have seen it all and it's nothing to them. They are used to it (for example of you get to the hospital and you are so close to delivery that there is no time for the enema).

I always worried about that too. I thought I would be so embarrassed, but you forget all about it when you're trying to get the baby out and most doctors will not even make mention of it if it did happen. They have soap and water to clean you up (and they use that anyway, sometimes, to help get the baby out too).

If you are worried about it, on your next visit to the doc ask him/her about it and what his/her procedure is for it. Never be afraid to ask them questions. That is what they are there for and what you are paying them for (if you don't want to ask him/her then ask the nurse).

Just relax and take care!

Yep...but you really won't care. The nurses are totally used to it and they get it cleaned up really fast using one of those "chux" pads. It is a mortifying thought but it is normal.

For those that said otherwise, they must not have had kids themselves. And the person that said the muscles you use won't affect your anus...well that is wrong too. If you are pushing correctly, it is the same type of muscle contraction that you would use if you were straining to go poop.

I don't think I did, either time.I don't recall the doctor wiping my butt, and there was nothing there afterwards.I wouldn't have cared if I did, though. You shouldn't worry about things like that during labor.I didn't have an enima, either time, but everything kind of shuts down, too. If you're pregnant, don't worry about it.You will have other things to fret about. If you're not pregnant, that's kind of an odd question.
