Feathers have a curve which makes the shuttlecock turn a particular way. If one made shuttlecocks (hah! Yahoo allows it WITHOUT a hyphen!) out of right-wing feathers they would spin the other way and make the game very confusing,

Spare a thought, though, for all the geese who are flapping round in tight left-hand turns.

It's only a guess, but I suspect that it's for the same reason that Native Americans always used feathers from the same side as flights on their arrows. The feathers from each wing have a specific shape to them, and are symmetrical opposites to the feathers on the opposing wing. Because of this, if feathers from both wings were used equally (not on arrows since they typically only have three flights) it would result in the projectile having little or no spin. The spin of arrows, shuttle cocks, footballs, and even bullets is what allows them to maintain trajectory they do.

It doesn't matter which wing is used, as long as only ONE wing is used. The feathers are angled differently on each wing, and if you had a mis-match of feathers on a shuttle-****, it wouldn't travel in a straight line as well.

Actually it depends on the date of plucking. Here we pluck the left wing on even days and the right wing on odd days, thus allowing the feathers to regenerate at equilibrium. Same as we remove just the larger claw of the stone crab, so that the crab may regrow the other and be a functional crab until the other claw is removed.

I didn't know that, but I'm guessing that Simon K is right. The left wing feathers will all twist in one direction, I suppose.

Someone else watched Poker Face last night, I guess geese must be left-winged, therefore making the left side stronger !
