i herad that it is a miniature "sonic boom" caused by the joint's fluid rushing in to fill a temporary vacuum!

It's the "snapping" of temporary protien deposits in the elbows, knees, knuckles, etc. but I'm not sure about the neck.

Some people have may have air in the air pockets, thus making louder cracks?

Its just like cavitation with a propeller. There is avacuum and the gas pops out of solution.

its an almost redundant echo location device used to locate the ends of your arms in extreme emergencies. much like the appendix it is a throw back from our arboreal past.
