Yes, the water was contaminated. Isn't that how some of the kids got the disease in the first place, and then at the end, Rider Strong dies in the water.

The disease has a different effect on animals than it does on humans. Take, for instance, the dog that appears later in the film which the main character ends up shooting. It has gone almost rabid from its desire to eat the rotting flesh of the people in the cabin, and, actually, ended up devouring much of the pretty blond girl's face before she was killed by her friend.
It would seem that the disease does not discriminate between species, but just has a different effect.

The dog died from drinking the tainted water. The disease was spread through the water not from person to person.
