And what about people who were born in Africa or are from Africa that happen to be Caucasian?

Actually.... Its a bit inconsiderate to say that all blacks want to be called African American. Some of us take offense because we don't know what part of Africa we came from, hence do not have the right to claim it and prefer to be called black.
If you run into a black or African American person who is from another country other than the ones specified in your answer, how about you ask them what they want to be called or go with "African European" for Europe, or "African Asian" for Asia, etc. etc.

I think this would be more of a pshycological question, since the need to define yourself by a title is a signal that you need special recognition in some area.
The need for people to be politically correct and such is the same thing. Instead of a person expressing their displeasure at a percieved slight, and allowing the offender to explain, or appologise..and simply communicate with each other, society figures that it needs to put rules in place to make sure that people's feelings are protected. When in fact the opposite occurs and it simply makes the need to be recognised by these titles stand out.
I doubt many folks would feel as African Americans do since their history tends to make them feel slighted at little or nothing. Were that otherwise, we'd be calling ourselves European Americans for the most part, since a significant percentage of us arise from that continent.
But to answer your question...I have been in nine different countries, and blacks are called blacks the world over except here.

They should be just called Americans. Why the distinction when it comes to other nationalities. If they are American, call them Americans. On another note, why is the African before the American? Shouldn't it be American African then? As long as people are distinguished / segregated by their nationality / colour etc., there will always be prejudice in this world. Stop separating one person from another and stop the favoritism of one person over another. God made us all and we are equal no matter what people say and God is the judge not people. Stop the parades / special events, etc. for some groups and not the other, i.e. gay parade day, miss black America, etc. As long as people are made to be different, they will remain different and segregated. Let us all join together and love one another as people and stop segregating one from another in ANY way. It should not matter what country that black people live in, or any other race for that matter, they should be classified as people and not African American, African Canadian, etc. Thank you for your question.

Not all black people wanna be called African American. I'm not from Africa and neither is anyone else in my family so I don't identify with africa at all. I prefer to be called black. I don't think it's insulting.

I believe that AMERICA is so diverse that people in order to differentiate themselves, recognise their heritage and include being American because they are both.To my knowledge no other country does this. Because we are a country formed from people FROM other nations,we like to identify ourselves to others and acknowledge our heritage.eg: Italian American, Polish American, Irish American, etc.Black people in other countries are called black people and it's not an issue.

I take offense at calling blacks "African Americans." You are either American or not.
That's like saying I'm a German-Irish-Italian-Czech-
Russian-British American. There is no such thing!!!
I am an American and proud of it!
