Up until the headbutt he deserved it, but when you leave your team out to dry in the final moments of a crucial game you don't deserve it.

i think Zidane deserves the award b/c he was the hero of World Cup 2006. He outshined all nonminees. Representing France, he uplifted the whole French nation and the team. It just seems like almost every French supporters got Zidaneist. And nobody throughout this year's golden ball nominees' done that. Besides, you shouldn't take away the honor just b/c he made one mistake -- headbutting someone for defending himself after being insulted. Also, everyone should know he has anger problems, so you should not try to provoke him in anyway, it was the Italian guy's problem, he deserved the headbutt. And guys, we should all look on the bright side of Zidane's career instead of the retarded stuff that he does often. After all, we are all human, there's always a limit to whatever that we can handle.
ps. see if FIFA takes the golden ball award away, then, shouldn't they take the World Cup away from Italy b/c a player makes the mistake of verbal abuse, then the team should suffer. You don't just insult someone's family or anything...it's wrong.

I seriously think Zidane certainly deserves the golden ball award despite what happened in the last minutes of the World Cup final. I mean, nobody's perfect and we should not strip him off from this award simply for one thing he did in the end but we should truly see and observe from the very beginning on how Zidane brought his team up all the way to the final, last but not least his beautiful ways of playing. Well, till now he's still the best player ever and I certainly agree wholeheartedly that Zinedine Zidane fully deserves this award which truly belongs to a player like him. Bravo, Zidane!

I think that he like any other player deserved to be treated with respect. Mutual respect regardless the individuals background is the key to the question in this case. The Italian team won the cup but at what price ?

There is no way he deserved it after that headbutt. No, Materazzi shouldn't have insulted Zidane's mother or sister but Zidane shouldn't have retaliated by headbutting Materazzi.
