Go to the hardware store and get a rubber expandable plug of the right size. It has a wing nut in the middle and when you push it in the drain tighten the wing nut and it will seal. Sorry to have to do this every time it rains but it can become a case of a 10 second rain preparation.

We removed the drain cover & screwed an 18 inch piece of pipe into the drain opening. The water level doesn't come up high enough to run over the top of the pipe.

It is a pain to remove the pipe to take a shower but it was a bigger pain to dry out the basement.

Put in a sump pump system in the crawl space underneath the property, close to the shower drain.

it sounds like you have a drainage problem, i would have a pro check out your grade and slope surrounding your house. afew drainage ditches/pipes could save very costly repairs in the future
