Obviously, it depends what's causing the clog but sometimes bleach will work if, for instance, the clog is a combination of lint from your washing machine and grease from your kitchen sink.
Before pouring anything down the drain, be advised that anything that was previously poured into the drain, mixed with the new stuff can cause a dangerous chemical reaction. Be careful!
Other household remedies include a mixture of baking soda and vinegar... it will foam up into the sink/tub.
If the clog is grease, boiling water may help but you will still need a cleaning agent "chaser" after the pipes cool down.
By the way, is the clog caused by a solid such as a small toy or a piece of jewelry? That would require removal of the trap, although you seem to indicate that the clog is something more conventional... hair, grease, lint in conbination.
Hope this helps...

Usually hair and soap scum clog sink drains. Do you see the the plunger rod behind the faucet? Follow that under the sink. It attaches to a lever coming out of the drain pipe just above the drain trap (the S-curve part). There is a ball valve nut holding the level in the drain pipe. Make sure the sink in drained thoroughly or get a pan under the trap and then remove the nut holding the plunger lever. When you do, you can then remove the lever. You will see a ball on it and then the stopper in the sink will come out easily. Probably a lot of hair and grease will come out with the stopper. You can also use a coat hanger in the drain to get the remaining hair out. Should clear up your drain. Then put the stopper back in, reinsert the lever, and fasten with the nut. Your sink drain should run clear now.

Try a wet & Dry vac! This will suck the clog right out, if its not impacted too hard against the sides.
Now, if its hair, use the wet & dry vac and then put some vinegar and baking soda down there, and it will fizz and clean the pipes...
For the hair, use one of those "grabbers" that they use in a garage for grabbing loose screws that fall in inaccessable areas...(Three prongs, that when you push the plunger, it opens up). I use mine a lot, when my kids dropped things down the drain of the sink and I had to retrieve it. You can pull lots of hair out of the sink too.
After you get the clog loose, run a lot of hot water down there, after the baking soda and vinegar..(it will fizz up a lot, so beware of that).
In fact, I would even put a few coffee grounds down there, to "stir up the action" of the vinegar and baking soda!
I wish you well..

Try the old fashioned way of using a bucket of hot water and pour it at a height. Keep doing it. It worked for me when I didn't have a plunger or a snake chain. Good Luck!

try bleach... my brother used to work as a chef and would wash his clothes ...and we eventually had a clog b/c of what we believe was all the grease stopping up the pipes... we poured straight bleach... let set for an hour...and then rinsed with boiling water... that definatly did the trick...
and yes we did try liquid plumr gel

only a plunger or snake will clear the drain, however I use coffee grinds to keep them clear as they are gritty and take the scum off the sides of the inside pipes.bleach will only pass over anything as it can't grab whatever is in there.
enjoy your coffee first before putting them down the drain
