Very bad idea. Most prisoners are resentful. If one is "mandated" to serve in the military, then they may very likely sabotage and hurt our own.
We are abundant in volunteers right now (exceeded July's quota numbers already!). Why include convicts???
If the convicts want to "give back to society," then they can complete community service (on their own time) after they have served their sentence(s).

Many US soldiers already have the gangster/thug mentality that is found in jails! I am for a pilot or experimental approach to the idea and not all of them, of course, would be good candidates. The "Black Sheep" air squadron in WWII was such an effort.
The USMC transforms young men off the street into robotic killers and then turns them loose onto the US streets. After finished in the marines, they continue their mindless agendas and then clutter the penitentiarys.

Being one of those robotic killers in the Marine Corps that abnjim5 refers to, I would definitely have to vote no against criminals in the military. The thug mentality that got these guys put in jail would be amplified in a battlefield situation, and would turn the Iraqi people against us. Believe it or not abnjim5, the vast majority of Iraqi's are happy we are there. Sadly, the extreme actions of a few Iraqi's, and a few Marines, are what make great headlines in the news. Giving criminals weapons and turning them loose on a society that is trying to get its feet on the ground after surviving a murderous dictator like Saddam, would be like trying to put out a fire with gasoline.
The actions of these criminals would definitely make more bad headlines and the ignorant who can't read past those headlines would have more justification for their judgements about our military.

I think it would be a good way for them to give back to their country since getting busted causes a burden, but I would be concerned over the safety of others. After all, if you have someone in the military who commited a violent crime, who's to say they won't use extreme measures to run off in another country and cause havoc there? I wouldn't want someone who commited a murder or rape, etc. to be involved with my country's military! They need to be behind bars where they have limited access to other people.

I don't like the idea, they could very well abandon, and never come back--rape, steal old habits.
Being in the army is like training exconvicts to become assasins. NO

Personally, I wouldn't trust an ex-convict with a gun. I think we should bring back Alcatraz.
