If it had brown stripes on a lighter brown coloration, it might have been a storeria dekayi. If it was that, the snake is nonvenomous and beneficial. Other than that, a solid brown snake would probably be a water snake similar to the cottonmouths of the United States. Those are venomous but beneficial. I'd have to see a picture of the creature in question before attempting to accurately name it. I hope that this helps out some, though.
