If you are talking about prisoners in the Federal & State penitentiaries, then this is not a good idea. Please take into consideration that these citizens are where they are because they either could not or would not follow the rules set by society.
With this in mind, just how effective would our military be if there was the chance that the soldiers on the "front line" decided not to follow orders. This would endanger the entire armed forces especially those service men and women that were not convicts but were depending on the performance of these soldiers.
An alternative idea would be to allow these "guests of the State" to enlist and serve in areas that are not security dependent in war zones and free up reliable soldiers for more important assignments.
This can be argued either way and probably is not a workable scenario unless we were in an ALL OUT world war and then you would only use select prisoners.
The idea of a "dirty dozen" is great for the movies, but I don't think it would work as a military asset.

They probably will be soon. Right know the army is being inflitrated by the Aryan Nation etc. Army is lowering standards cause people aren't enlisting. Inmates would be the next step. Not a good idea as vast majority are in for minor drug offenses.

Iraq war has no front lines. Death can come from anywhere when your dealing with IED and car bombs.
Forcing people to do military service really down grades the effectiveness anyways. Like the British Army in the American War for independance.

UMMMM...NO...Not to be rude, but that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Why would you send convicted criminals of God only knows what crime over to a country and give them a gun. And then when they do something stupid the whole world is watching and our military and our countrys name gets drug through the dirt. That is just stupid. And who is going to "train" these inmates? Aren't we spending enough tax dollars to house them and pay for their cable tv? You can't just send these people over there without educating them. Leave the fighting to the military. Support our Troops.

no because they wouldnt have been trained and there would have to be a gaurd watching them at all time and they cant be need to babysat 24/7.also if someone was not gaurded they could escape and the jail would get in to a lot trouble and that would be a crimnal on the loss.

Maybe child molesters and serial killers--but also consider gang members--they want to turn their neighborhoods into war zones and hurt innocent people---send them to a real war zone out in the middle eastern desert--then see how brave they are. Betcha they'd pee their pants.

civilian or military? There was a special forces group in WWII , that was entirely composed of military prisoners. ( a movie was based on this unit's 4th mission, when the unit took heavy casualties).
Interesting question none the less.

No, I think the president's daughters should be. He's the stupid ******* who sent our young men and women to war without making any personal sacrifice himself, whatsoever.
