Yuri Gagarin--April 12, 1961 (I was 9 days old...) became the first man to fly in space when he went up for a SINGLE ORBIT of the earth.
Alan B. Shepard--May 5, 1961 became the first AMERICAN in space on a sub-orbital flight in the Mercury Spacecraft atop a Redstone booster. The flight lasted all of 15 minutes and he splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean close to Bermuda.
Virgil "Gus" Grissom--July 12, 1961 became the 2nd American in space on another sub-orbital flight. His spacecraft sank. Just a few years back they recovered it out of the Atlantic.
Titov (USSR) was next and orbited for a DAY.
Flying in space was similar to flying at high altitudes. They knew they needed pressure suits or a pressurized cabin, oxygen, something to scrub out carbon dioxide, and in case of the ones that orbited the earth, something to eat, drink, and the ability to take a poop or a pi$$!

These would be the people who first came to earth several million years ago and planted the seeds of life here. They were than wiped out in a catastrophic nuclear (pronounced nook-you-lar if you're GW Bush) war that all but wiped out humanity. A few survived and are mentioned in the Bible in passages such as "and there were giants in the land in those days" and they mated with the primitive human women, thus giving rise to humanity. Since no records survived, its difficult to know how they survived the trip in space or where they came from.

the first person outside of the earth atmosphere , im sure im spelling this badly, was Uri Gragarin a russian in the early 60s and he only went out into space and back so he only needed oxygen basically . How did they know what he needed? well they did know there wasnt any oxygen out there so they sent him equipped, before they sent the man they sent lots of dogs and monkeys during the late 50s and early 60s, both russians and americans. However the russians lost the race to be fists on the moon, and first to do a space walk and so on, so they concentrated on staying out in space the longest, with their space station. Im sure we learned a lot from them and they learned a lot from us. When the information age came along then many other countries got into the business of shooting satelites out into earth orbit.

The first person to go to space officially was Yuri Gegarin a Cosmonaut of the USSR. Unofficial rumours have circulated for decades saying he was really the first person to return from space still alive and that other Cosmonauts were sent up before him. The Soviets were never much for making their mistakes known--even to this day.

the russians sent up animals before they sent up humans. I believe the first dog in space was named Lyca... They also sent a chimp. The Russians also take credit for the first manned flight to reach "space"... I can't recall his name off the top of my head, but he stayed up there for a while. He maintained a low orbit, and carried out a few experiments... probably beat off a lot too... That's a whole lot of time to kill ya know

I am sure a few cave men have been lifted into outer-space if they had the unfortunate luck of being to close to an asteroid or comet strike. Earth rocks have been found on the moon from such strikes.
