You should consider looking around for an agent that specializes in your destination. And, that doesn't always mean they will be located in your home town. An agent that specializes in your vacation will really help you out a lot. For example, there are a lot of really great agencies that specialize in Disney, Cruises, etc. you just need to do a little research to find the best one for you.

I really suggest staying away from sites like Expedia, Orbitz, Sams Club, etc. Even if you are able to save a little, you may find yourself in a situation later where you wish you didn't book with them. You will find that anything that comes a long your way has to be taken care of by you and in many situations cannot be taken care of.

In regards to the other answers, I'm really not sure why she says travel agents have higher prices. I've used an agent for many years now and I have almost always found that the rates with agencies are either identical or a little less than what I can find on my own. In very few situations the rates are a little higher, but again, I feel it is worth the extra. Of course, it depends on what you are buying, air, for example, may have surcharges since most airlines don't give commissions.

But I recommend doing a little research. I know most towns have travel agencies like AAA, I've not had good luck with this agency, but have had great success with my online agent. So a little research can really help you a lot.
