Or, did they just run for office to live the 'cakish' life? Do they have enough collective willpower to stand against pressure from lobbyists/big business?

The tacit assumption behind the question is that "public opinion" somehow differs from that of big business. The people believe what they are told and do as they are told by big business. (In fact, maybe this is not such a bad thing as left to their own devices they would probably loot and pillage and rape the neighbor's dog.) So why should politicians believe/act any differently? Perhaps those who fret about the future of "democracy" would be better off just going to work, spending whatever they make at Wal-Mart, and watching "American Idol." Seriously. Maybe runaway global warming and peak oil and global pandemic and whatever other nasties are in store are just what humanity needs and deserves. Hey, cheer up... Lovelock suggested that a few breeding pairs might survive. The appropriate strategy to take advantage of the situation? Eat all your neighbors before they eat you.

My representative has a good handle on public opinion. However, if the opinions of his big money contributors differs from the general electorate he goes for the money. He has the spine of a jellyfish when it comes to standing up to the powerful and he's a Dem.

They know-but they owe to many favors to the lobbyists who got them in and keep them there. I wish elections were not sponsored by Companies-just taxes (I know that hurts). but now an honest man could not get in without the money given by sponsors-in exchange for favors. You don't bite the hand that feeds you.

well... they know what people get angry about, and vote accordingly... but for the majority, they do what they want, since most people don't know about 99 percent of what goes on in Washington...

in other words they vote money into their own pocket all year long, except on the two (out of 1,000) issues that a few people in the state actually care about...

why should they stand against them... the people don't care enough to pay attention...
