Dont confront them.
Find a mentor at work who is also a confidant. Ask them to monitor the activities of this rumour spreader and keep a record
of what was said. Go to your line manager and file a complain against this person.
If your allegation is proven an official warning will put a quick stop to the rumour spreading. Demand a letter of apology and a written promise not to spread any more rumours.

firstly my advice to you is to find out if these rumours are actually happening and whether or not your work colleague has actually started the rumour off. if you find out that it is correct then my advice would be to go and talk to your boss. if no prevail with the boss then i would take it up higher.

Burn them.

Burn them all.

Or confront them in public, and try to come off as calm and disapproving when you do it. Also, think about what you'd want to say if they maintain the lie to your face, and other bad scenarios, and think of how you'd like to respond to them.

Or, speak to a manager or someone senior in HR, and ask them for advice on how to deal with the situation (without looking like you're 'telling tales').

But I prefer burning them all.

I think you should confront the person one on one....ask them if they are spreading rumors and why? Try to resolve it.... Ask them to stop. Be as calm as you can...getting hostile will just make it worse. If you take these steps and make no headway, then I'd make a formal complaint with your HR person and get it in writing. (if you start acting the same way as this person it could backfire.... you could be the one in trouble with HR)

Your character and behavior speaks for its self and all around you know you.

Do one of two things. Ignore it, respond t no questions about it and do not even try to defend yourself. Don't even act as though you are aware of the issue.

Or, as to speak to the top owner and request that the person and you should have a meeting in his office.

confront them face to face. see if they have the balls to address you in public. try and make it a public thing too. calling out backstabbing snitches shows the rest of the office what kind of character they are. taking it up with the boss won't really do much except further ignite their malcontent for you.

Treachery always works best. Forget the bosses etc, get your own revenge in your own way. And make it serious.

Ignore it. If you know that its not true then it shouldn't be a problem. Don't let it get to you. That's from a personal experience

Do not confront them, do not talk to your boss, go directly to your HR director and let them handle it.
They will know what to do.
