my baby is supposed to be born with a low birth weight. Right now she weighs in at 5 lbs and 1 oz. I have about 3 more weeks left. How much do you think she will weigh?

Hello, I'm right there with you. My baby is measuring on the small side due to low amniotic fluid, but is not suffering growth retardation. I am due for a c section in 19 days. I had my last ultrasound a week ago and they estimated the baby's weight at 5 1/2 lbs. At that time the tech told me that the ultrasound was plus or minus one lb - which is a lot really, think of it, a 4 1/2 lb baby or a 6 1/2 lb baby, big difference.

I'm not worrying about it. The baby looks great and is still very active. The tech told me figure 1/2 lb a week each week until delivery - again, that means anywhere from a 6 lb baby to 8 lb baby. As long as he is born healthy I will be very happy.

Good luck to you, I hope you have a great delivery!

Typically a baby gains a 1/2lb a week at this point so you are looking at another 1.5 lbs. Ultrasounds can be off by 1lb either way. I was told with my second child he would be between 7-7.5lbs and he was 9lbs 1oz. They were also worried my 3rd child would be small as I was measuring (fundal height) small but she was born 10 days early and weight 8lbs 6oz. So it is only an estimate.

The only time the ultrasound is accurate is at the beginning of the pregnancy in predicting gestational age. All babies grow at the same rate until after the first trimester. But of course not everyone carries the baby to term.

The estimated fetal weight by ultrasound is actually extrapolated from the various measurements done on the baby, e.g. the diameter and circumference of the fetal head, the abdominal circumference, femur length, etc. So we are not actually "weighing" the baby itself, but basing it on the size of the fetus.

In my experience, most ultrasound weight estimates tend to be under-estimated, so i usually tell my patients that the estimated fetal weight would represent the lowest possible weight of the baby and that the actual weight would be a little over that.

So yes, ultrasound weight measurements are not accurate in that sense, but the parameters measured, taken as a whole, will give the doctor a fairly accurate picture as to the well-being of the baby.

The measuremetns are accurate. As far as size...as far as weight goes...it can be off by 2 pounds or so. I do ultrasounds and that is just the standard rule...the ultrasound is to make sure that the babys measurements match the fetal age. I wouldn't worry about it as long as the measurements of the head and other parts match how many weeks pregnant you are.

The doctors office I went to was right on the money. They did have the most up to date machines, so it might depend on the equipment they have available. I did not have any problems or doubts with my babies weight at all. The day before I went into labor I had an ultrasound done and they had told me the baby weighed in at 7.3 and the next morning there was a 7.3 pound baby.

Not very accurate. I had an ultrasound on Friday, and they told me my son was about 7 pounds. He was actually born the very next day via emergency c-section (two weeks early) and he was 8 lb. 11 oz.

Level 1 measurements are typically very accurate as long as you have a good ultrasound machine and a good Sonographer at the controls.

5 pounds or more is good weight she will be about 7 pounds they are off a little. What is your shoe size my friend is having a baby and she said they told her her shoe size is what size her baby would be. So I though about it and my son was 7lbs 2oz and my shoe sizes is a 61/2 to 7. I don't know just a though.

That is about right. It depends on the equipment and the expirience of the ultasound tech, but usually they're off by +/- a pound. Which all things considered is still pretty good

From the Ultrasound people I know, it depends on the tech and how experienced they are.
