no, it will not starve. i suggest feeding it spirulina algae wafers. also know you should not use algaecides in your aquarium. instead do two water changes of 20% twice a month. remember to dechlorinate your water!
in response to the answer below. there is not enough algae growing in the tank for him. he will not starve to death, but a supplement is recommended. also, they can soak them in vitamins for your algae eater.

If you are worried you can drop in a algae wafers. Most algae eaters will eat left overs off the bot tum. I'd only worry if you are feeding the rest of your fish a worm/shrimp/etc diet. (Most flakes for tropical fish are mixed veggies and meat.)
