I have a mutt (Border Collie/Lab Cross Rescue) and a purebred Australian Shepherd (From the SPCA) Both are wonderful pets! I really like my mixed breed because he is unique looking and has the good qualities of a Border Collie and Lab without a lot of the negatives. He has had excellent health his entire life and just turned 12 years old on the weekend. He is people oriented but friendly with dogs and other animals.
My Australian Shepherd has been in great health (he's 6 years right now), but his personality is much different. He has the protective and wariness of an Aussie which makes it difficult for friends to come over. (He shows agressiveness on his territory). He also has a habit of herding other dogs and animals, which is amusing (for us more then his victims!) but is not always welcomed. However, he is very playful and loving towards his family. He loves to sit next to you and be petted.
It really depends on the breed and individual dog. You need to research what would suit your lifestyle best. The advantage of purebreds (From reputable breeders) is that you will know their lineage and they should have nice personalities. You will also be able to better understand which would suit your lifestyle from breed standards. It can be harder to predict that with mixed breeds, especially if you are very unsure of what breeds are in the mix. However, either way you are sure to find a dog that will suit you. Certain purebreds are prone to specific problems, so a lot of research will need to be made.
Just my views on the purebred/mixed discussions :)

The only advantage is that mutts tend to have less health problems

We have one dog who is a pure-blood German Shepherd, and one who is a full-blown mutt; part Border Collie, part Australian Shepherd, and maybe a bit of Papillion thrown in ! They both have wonderful, distinct personalities and over the years have become almost like little furry people in the way we can communicate and understand them. No... we don't woof-woof to each other, but when Smokey (the German Shepherd) gently puts my wrist in his mouth, I know it's dinner time.
For him... not me...

a mutt...cockapoo (cocker spaniel and poodle)...best dog I have ever met....I love my little baby to death...she is well behaved, good with children, and she is always there when I need her. I don't think there is any advantage to either...it just depends what you are looking for.

Don't you know that mutts are always the best, they have the smarts of multiple breeds.
