Question: In Brokeback Mountain, was Jack's death a setup, and where/why was he killed?

I was wondering if anyone knows who killed Jack? Was it a setup? Was he killed by certain people? Where was he killed?

Do you think that his wife knew that he was gay, or only after finding out he was murdered?

My thought was that because of him hanging with the new guy in his life that he went to some cabin or whatever with, people (random, homophobic guys) found out and beat him. They mention something similar to that scene earlier in the movie, something about some gay getting beat up, I believe. And from the movie it looks like he was killed out in some field by the road.

His wife...I believe that it was implied that she knew he was gay, but I think it was because she found out about his affair like the guys did. It's possible she initiated the guys beating up her husband, so she didn't have to deal with it. It's kind of left out in the open. Interesting topic though, got me thinking! :)

I think his wife caught on pretty early that Jack was gay and having relations with the other guy. She seemed pretty worldly and perceptive. I don't think it hurt her like it hurt the other guy's wife though. I also think Jack was murdered to either look like it was an accident or maybe Jack's wife just told the other guy it was an accident so as not to upset him or confirm that she knew what was going on between the two. I don't think she was acting smug towards her man's lover, I think she felt bad for him. When she tells him that her husband is dead doesn't he flashback in his head of that story his dad told him, about a gay guy being murdered?

Jack Twist was not murdered.
He was killed in the accident as Lureen explained on the phone.
Ennis was terrified of being murdered because of what he had witnessed as a child, when his father forced him to look at the murdered and mutilated corpse of a gay man in his town.
The murder scene is a flashback and is in Ennis's mind.
Also in the short story Annie Proulx, storyteller, author and narrator says: "Ennis didn't hear about the accident until six months after . . . "
All further references to a murder scenario are in Ennis's mind and due to his fear. Ennis can't have known anything. It was 1983 when Jack died. In a town/city where he and his wife were well known. A murder would not have been covered up.
Also, Ennis imagines a murder in exactly the same way as Earl, his gay neighbor was killed in 1951 ie with a tire iron.
Highly improbable two murders would happen in exactly the same way.
Conclusion: Annie Proulx artfully veils the truth by showing us Ennis's vivid imagination and his inner conviction that Jack was murdered.
He wasn't. He died in an accident.

I'm not sure where Jack was killed or if it was a setup...it might have been by his wife or in laws or he thought he ran into some guys who he thought might have been gay and they took him out somewhere and killed him.
I think that his wife knew he was gay because when Heath Ledger's character called Jack's wife on the phone she seemed very smug.

I think he was killed by some homophobes men, who have understood he is gay, and he was killed near to the home he lived in, on the road. I think his wife understood he is gay when she found out he was killed.

Brokeback mountain is one of my favorite movies!

He was killed because he was gay, random guys found out and beat him.

His wife knew because she didn't give a crap about his death and had all his money.
