I listen to heavy metal but the real thing not this new trash noise stuff. I like the bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, AC/DC (who would be more of a Hard Rock genre), Metallica, and Guns N Roses (up to Illusion). Mostly I like the older bands (I'm 37) and most of the stuff that I consider Heavy Metal is now quite tame in comparison. I personally think that today’s Metal bands are just trying to re-capture some of the "shock value" that artists like Alice Cooper Or Ozzy Osbourne made popular. In doing so they have to be louder and more profane than everyone else. If you stop to listen to songs like Love Hurts (Nazareth) you get a sense that those guys liked to play great songs. There are a lot of great Metal classics that you might not even consider metal. Look at Led Zeppelin considered by many to be the first “heavy metal” band but they considered themselves to be playing the blues (heavy blues).
Most of why I like heavy Metal is because of the raw energy that the music conveys. It is not all sugar coated like Pop Music. So many songs that come out today are produced to make $$ and they all sound alike. Really what is the difference between Britney, Christina, Lindsay, or Jessica – musically? While I am not a fan of Rap I can accept it as an art form as a spoken work genre ( I am not talking about “artists that rip off music and then add their own words). A lot of the big groups from the 60's, 70's, & 80's would never even get signed today because the industry is so DOLLAR driven. Think that a band like U2 would get signed today...seriously, not a chance. Not every song they wrote back in the 80's was a hit. Half the reason they have hits today is because of the following they have from back then.
The only hard rock band that is new that I really like is Green Day. I know some people are going to say that they are not a rock band but a punk band. They have good songs that are well arranged and there is a message; that because of their harder edge falls on deaf ears (meaning people write them off as noise makers).

If you think metal isn't musical, you aren't listening to the right metal. Listen to anything by Sabbath or Maiden, or Ozzy when he had Rhoads on guitar. It's all classically and blues based riffs.
Other than that though, metal has so many fans because it's so honest. Metal is raw emotion and not cookie cutter crap that's pumped out nowadays. Metal musicians love what they do and they do it well, go to any show and every person in the crowd and on stage will be dripping with sweat by the time the show's done. And to say that punk (by today's standards) is DIY, is just ridiculous. New punk bands are being pumped out and stamped by record labels just like boy bands were a few years ago.

Metal is suppost to be hard and fast, not pretty boys that all the preteen girls like on mtv and vh1.

The same reason you listen to punk. Becasue we like it, so we listen. And all music is musicaly based. What you said makes no sense. If you've never listened to Metal, you have no right to just assume that Metal has no mentality.
What if I said why do you listen to Punk? Eh? It's "not musically based". ........ Wrong man. Metals good music just as Punk.
By the way bands who play Metal usually have better lyrics than those who play punk. Not all Metal is just screaming. It has melody and meaning and you need to realize that.

For the same reason some people ask stupid questions. Maybe you don't think it is a stupid question, but everyone else does. Same goes for music, maybe you like Barry Manilow, and no one else does. Oh, I get it, you are some kind of musical snob or musical genius phenom and think because metal is not musically based, it can't be music? Right, and do you read anything besides guitar and girlie magazines? Most people don't consider that **** as worth reading because it is not "literature" based. Dude, grow up and expand your horizons - the music world does not revolve around "punk" which has been dead, for what, 20 years now?????

wow you really got peoples panites in a bunch with this question! i am in a heavy metal band. i do like punk as well as most other music. listen to different kinds of music they all have different "tastes" you can learn from. such as: metal usally has more double bass at a slower tempo, a lot of the time it is in 4/4 time so you can bang your head more easly. punk is a lot faster and louder so you can mess people up. then you get into things like emo and classic rock, but all rock and roll stem from the same roots. they all have the same message just different ways of getting it out. if i may give advice it would be to listen to as much different music as possible and, if you want, combine it to make what YOU want so you can make people ask "why listen to that?" maybe after you loose your virginity and grow up a little you wont be so closed minded

I am not a big metal fan. However, your statement that "its not musically based" is just plain ignorant. Metal is music, utilizing notes scales chords, counterpoint, tempo, keys and various time signatures. A lot of Metal is far more complex than punk, and it certainly has at least several different mentalities.
"Sounds like Crap" and "not musical" is pretty weak as far as music criticism goes and has been applied to almost every kind of music by people who didn't like a particular form..
If everybody liked the same kind of music it would be quite a boring world.

Usually wannabes listen to punk because they want to be different and more angst ridden then metalheads. The thing is that punk is pretty... well... It's just lame most of the time. Either it's a no talent band just making a bunch of noise or its that loopy whiny happy punk where they try to act hard but end up coming off WAAAAY to Girly in a man-girl kind of way.
Don't worry you'll grow out of it.

Why do you listen to the music you listen to?...some people might consider what you listen to, to be crap....everyone has there own taste in music and there own opinions....how boring would it be if there was only one type of music?....There are so many different bands out with there own sounds, for the simple fact that not everyone likes the same music....so that is why people listen to metal....because they like it...plain and simple.
