After many stories, Arthur Conan Doyle was tired of Holmes, and decided to "write him out" in the story "The Final Problem", having him fall to his death at the hand of Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls.
But the public demand for further Holmes stories was so great that after a couple of years he was persuaded to resurrect Holmes in "The Adventure of the Empty House." Apparently Holmes had decided to fake his own death to get Moriarty off his trail, and had been doing noble things under assumed names during the time he was presumed dead
When he was at last allowed to "retire, " it is to be assumed that he moved to rural Sussex and kept bees, which was what he said he would do.

Josh W is soooo ignorant. Moriarty didnt kill Holmes in the final solution. Holmes survived and went on to die of old age. He lived at least as far as 1914, as seen in the story "His last Bow".

the different answerers are maximum ideal. Sherlock Holmes memories were serialized in month-to-month magazines in England, lengthy before they were compiled in books. Doyle were given drained of writing them, and killed off the nature, so he ought to write different memories. The mag readers clamored for better Holmes memories, and the editors offered money, so Doyle revived the nature.

He only kindasorta died. He was technically "killed" by Moriarty--they struggled and both men fell into the churning waters of Reichenbach Falls--but Doyle resurrected the character later, because reader demand was high and publishers offered him big bucks to do so.

No one killed him. They once thought he was dead, when Moriarty and him fought each other on a cliff, but he didn't die.
As far as I know, Doyle never did kill him off completely. He was in such high demand at the time.
