My favorite, "The Shining" by Stephen King, and "It" is a close second. But if you are a fan of horror ( and I'm assuming you are) you may have already read these. I enjoy picking up anthologies of short stories, which run the gamet from the classics, i.e. Poe,Bierce- to more contempary writers. The stories are quick, to the point, and can sometimes lead you to another author that has longer stories to enjoy.Happy ( or scary ) reading!

Have you seen the Movie "The Ring" or at least heard of it? The Movie is based off a book by Koji Suzuki, and it's fantastic. The part in the book where he describes the film is..... intense, as well as (in my opinion) far better than the film that was shown in the movie. Also a book called Angel of Darkness, by Samual M. Key (which is a pen name for Charles DeLint, if you know the Author) which is also great. Its the 1st in a series of three. There is another one i read that i can't really remember the title of at the moment, but It was called either "Murder of Angels' or 'Screams of Angels'. I don't think its the latter.... but either way, that one was amazing, and I highly recommend it. Lastly there was a zombie book i read that was, suprizingly, very enjoyable. It was called 'Xombies' and follows a similar storyline to that of 28 days later, with a plague of 'xombies' taking over the world after the majority of the human population gets infected with a mysterious Agent X. heh, I hope this helped. :p

OH, also "The Haunting" by Shirley Jackson. Its a Classic!

Good ones I have found:

Poppy Z. Brite's "Lost Souls?" "Drawing Blood" "Wormwood" (also called Swamp Foetis)

The Hot Blood Series editted by Jeff Gelb

The first 8 or so of the Anita Blake books by Laurell K. Hamilton (gets pretty bad at Narcissus in Chains)

The Amanda series by yours truly -- erotic horror. Unpublished as yet, werewolves as heroes. NO VAMPIRE HEROES EVER!! 3 1/2 books in the series, each full length. Any publishers out there???

Koontz is one of the best. Stephen King used to be good but now some of his stuff is just gross. I couldn't even finish "Dream Catcher", it was revolting. For younger people, Christopher Pike is good.

You know who's the master of horror/thrillers? Edgar Allan Poe, of course! Read a few of his short stories alone in bed, and you'll get the urge to get up and make sure all your doors are locked and your windows are shut.

The Shining, awesome book.
Cujo, as long as we're talking about King.

Any of his Castle Rock stories should suffice (Pet Sematary, The Dark Half, Needful Things etc.)

Dark Tower series is good but it's not really horror, very fantasy oriented, I thought.
