First of all, as one daughter of a breast cancer survivor to another, may I give you a cyber-hug? Cancer affects family almost as badly as the person fighting it.

There are a few possibilities here. This could just be a shadow of scarring, a nice, happy, benign cyst, or a "blip" on the film. If it is something worse, they've found it VERY early, which as you know is key. If she has the dreaded "breast cancer gene," her disposition towards it is greater than the average woman and this could be a brand new tumor. There is a possibility that the original cancer broke through the cell wall, it might have left a "shadow" on neighboring cells.

Try not to worry yourself to death. She's going to be a high-priority patient. Make sure they do all the testing and biopsies and ultrasounds and everything and if you guys have any doubts, keep nagging them.

*HUG* Try to stay strong. You aren't alone.

It is possible that the cancer has recurred in this period of time. If it is a local recurrence, still in her breast, it does not necessarily shorten your mother's lifespan and can be treated with further surgery. It is also possible that it is another cause entirely. The physician will most likely order a biopsy of the area in question and the pathologist will provide direction on what the lesion is.
