Heavy Metal originated in the early 70's but have roots to the late 60's..

Steppenwolf were the first band to use the term but I believe Black Sabbath to be considered the 1st Heavy Metal band.

The song Summertime Blues by Blue Cheer's is considered by most as the original heavy metal tune.

Alice Cooper and Led Zeppelin were the mainstream ones, but there was a lot of undergound "Metal" in the 70's like Motorhead and others. There is no one grandfather of Metal, it evolved from 70's arena rock and psychedilics. BTW: "Heavy Metal" as a phrase was coined by a line in a Steppenwolf song and by a classic Anime feature from back in the day. OOOOh! DOn't forget Black Sabbath's influence!!!!

I'm not a heavy metal fan, but I'd like to share some of my knowledge on this subject.
In late 60's and early 70's new style of music genre had emerged to music scene at that time. These music vastly known by media as Hard Rock, basically was Blues-based music with power chords, heavy riff, and sustained licks. These genre musician were Cream, Led Zeppelin, Humble Pie, The Free 'later on reformed as' Bad Company, The Faces, etc. The terms Heavy Metal also vastly known by media to draw the line between Hard Rock with a slightly different style of music genre emerged in early and mid 70's which were louder, harder and faster sometimes power ballads also with power chords and heavy riff, only these were not Blues-based music. These genre musician were Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Ted Nugent, Blue Oyster Cult, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Motorhead, Budgie, Diamond Head, Def Leppard, etc. The terms of Heavy Metal could easily describe as Ted Nugent once said "it sucks large Quantities of diseased buffalo dick" or Judas Priest song titled 'Heavy Metal' which is "an armour-plated raging beast that's born of steel and leather, it will survive agains all odds, stampeding on forever".

most folks think that sabbath was the creator of that sound but they are true not correct

Some claim that the US rock music critic Lester Bangs, while working for Creem magazine, used the expression in 1968 to describe a performance of the band MC5 (Motor City Five) from Detroit. Creem magazine themselves attribute the term to Mike Saunders, in an article about the 'Kingdom Come' album, by Sir Lord Baltimore, in the May 1971 edition of the magazine

"This album is a far cry from the currently prevalent Grand Funk sludge, because Sir Lord Baltimore seems to have down pat most all the best heavy metal tricks in the book. Precisely, they sound like a mix between the uptempo noiseblasts of Led Zeppelin (instrumentally) and singing that’s like an unending Johnny Winter shriek: they have it all down cold, including medium or uptempo blasts a la LZ, a perfect carbon of early cataclysmic MC5."

The term 'heavy metal' was first coined for Jimi Hendrix, when one journalist described his music as sounding like "heavy metal falling from the sky."

However, what is generally regarded as the first heavy metal recording is the song "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles.
