Like many of the TNG characters during its first season, the Crusher character wasn't very well developed and there were some disagreements between the show's producers and McFadden about how the character should develop. These disagreements led to some bad blood between her and several executive producers, resulting in McFadden's being released from her contract and not being in TNG's second season.
However, her replacement Diana Muldaur proved to be unpopular and McFadden was personally asked to return by Rick Berman. At first McFadden was hesitant as she had felt she had moved on; however, after a phone call from her co-star Patrick Stewart, McFadden changed her mind and returned for season three and the remainder of the series.
She did not "have a baby" during season 2, nor is that why she left the show. She actually was pregnant during season 4 of TNG and acted threw the end of the season, giving birth to son, James Cleveland McFadden-Talbot on July 10th, 1991. James is her only child.
Trivia: The Medical "Gown" seen throughout the latter half of TNG was introduced in season 4 to help hide Gate's Pregnancy. The episode "The Host" which originally aired in Early May of 1991, focused alot on Dr. Crusher in a romatic relationship. The producers had to get creative to hide the pregnancy because her character was, of course, not pregnant. They didn't show her much after "The Host" for the remaining 3 episodes of the season. But if you get a peek, she was definately showing!

On Star Trek TNG, why was Crusher replaced by Pulaski? And...?

i've read that Crusher complained about sexism in script (which star trek is saturated in AND they took retarded mini skirts for all female team-members and heavy make-up that even adult industry workers would be ashamed of into sequels) and got replaced by more agreeable Pulaski. I wish they kept Pulaski. Crusher was written poorly. There's nothing interesting about her. No actress could pull that off. Overall the show is written lazy, like most shows because people will watch just about anything.

I thought it was over a baby. Dr. Crusher left at the beginning of season 2 and was replaced with the very Doctor "Bones" McCoy-ish Pulaski. At the beginning of season 3, Pulaski left and Crusher returned.

I think it was just that the actress play Crusher wanted a break and cam e back when ready. Pulaski was a dud anyway. The poor actress had a similar unceremoneous dumping from LA Law when she didn't fit in with the rest of the office..fell down the elevator shaft!
Edited re baby... thought that maybe but didn't want to guess wrong

Gates McFadden left the show to have a baby. When she was ready, she came back. Dianna Muldaur was always supposed to be a temporary replacement.
