I have been in TX a year and a half now and everyone is shocked that I have never been to a rodeo before so I am going to one sometime this week with a bunch of friends. I am a city gal and know nothing about rodeos, can you tell me more?

There are several evnts to keep track of at a rodeo:
They usually start off with the Bull Rising. This is when the clowns show up. The cowboys get on the back of a bull and they have to stray on the back of it for 8 seconds to receive a score .They also have to "mark out" which means that they have to spur the bull as soon as they leave the shute. The reason for the clowns is because a bull will go after the cowboy after he gets bucked off and will try to kill him many times.
The horses come in 2 styles: Bareback (no saddle) and buckin' Broncs (with a saddle) .There are no clowns for these events because horses will not attack a fallen rider. Again, the cowboy is required to stay on for 8 seconds.
The score is based on both the animal and the rider, each getting a score of 1-50 and accounting for 1/2 of the score. There are usually 2 judges, and they average the scores for the final total.
Women are usually involved in barrel racing. This is, obviously, a timed event. Fastest to the finish wins.
Roping comes in 2 versions, team and solo. Both are times events.
Solo roping requires the cowboy to rope the calf/sterr by his head, and run over to him and throw it on its back and then he must tie the steer's legs together.
Team roping requires the one partner to rope the steer's head and the other his heels.

The rodeo clowns, btw, come in two varieties: Bull fighter and Barrelman.
The bullfighter is who you think of when someone says rodeo clown.
The Barrelman stands/sits inside the barrel and provides it with some weight for the bullshigter to use against the bull.

Have fun

I grew up in Oklahoma and have attended countless rodeos in OK and TX. My advice for you is to go with an open mind and enjoy seeing the people and events. Every event has different rules that are very easy to understand by watching. Rodeos are a great time to get with friends, drink beer, and go to the rodeo dance with friends. It's also a great time to see all the cowboys in their Wranglers :-)! If you get a chance try to go behind the scenes and talk to the guys/gals participating. It's a fun experience, just take it all in!

It's where people get on a bull and try to stay on for a certain amount of time while the bull is running around trying to get the person on him off.
If the person is able to hold on for a certain amount of time, they win some money. If they fall before time, they don't.
But it's very dangerous because they might fall off and be severely hurt if they fall hard and/or the bull kicks them.
Some people have evn died because of that.
(On rodeos they have a band or group playing most of the time)
But, it's actually fun and you have a good time.

Wear a short jean skirt with a white shirt tied at the midsection and a cowboy hat and you'll fit right in. Prepare for a good time and lots of beautiful people (most of them).

p.s. don't forget the boots ;)

Grown men in funny outfits and big hats try to ride beasts for as long as they can w/ getting stomped to death. That pretty much sums it up.
