Yes, there has been discrimination - not just for blacks, but other minorities as well. Here's the difference:
Real simple, there's big minorities and there's small minorities. Notice, you don't hear much about "Eskimo rights." Blacks, however - even though they make up the largest minority, are still a MINORITY. That makes for a demographic that leads to some sad politics in this country.
Rather than exact equality, politicians needed to find a way to convince blacks that they needed - and were owed - some kind of compensation. But compensation is NEVER the same as equality. To get the black vote, these power happy crooks drilled it into the black community that not only had some mortal sin been committed against them, but also that they stood no chance of being anyone in this lifetime. Votes were basicly bought votes with things like welfare.
A sense of hopelessness, feeling owed something, and receiving sympathy: That's the exact formula that leads people to crime, laziness, bummy behavior.

What you say is accurate but I think your tone makes you sound racist. That is your right though. Even more so, Asians come here and in one generation own businesses and are well off. Nobody gets more racism thrown at them then Asians yet they do well. Mostly it is white liberals telling blacks that they can't do it with out their lilly white help. White liberals really do not believe blacks can make it on their own so they keep them down with hand outs. If somebody paid your bills and gave you free money your whole life would you ever be motivated to go out and improve yourself, get educated and get a career? Likely not, but some do. It really is too bad.

Perhaps too much support from the government actually works against them. If it's handed to you, you won't have the pride and ownership of the hard work it took.
Perhaps the lack of family structure. IE: Father's Day is a far less popular day in the black community. Go figure.
This probably contributes to gravitating toward gangs and rappers as role models.
Then there you have the endless cycle.

Blacks do not "fail miserably"- just take a look around you, and you'll see living proof of that probably no fewer than five feet away. There are millions of successful African Americans in our society, and I think we're better off because of it.
As to the crime par tof your question- Blacks do not commit any more crime than anyone of any other ethnicity living in a ghetto, or living in underprivilidged circumstances.
Poverty is the ugly father of street-crime, just as wealth and greed is the snobbish father of white collar crime.
The main problem African Americans have in this country is being looked down on by racists simply because of the color of their skin, and by snobby employers who think that just because someone grew up in a low-rent district they must be a crack head ! I know- I'm latina- and where I come from we get it just as bad !

because for the most part their attitude is "why should i do something when i can do nothing and get everything?" if the government would crack down on how much welfare they were giving out it would be a different world. i'm sure there are a lot of people on welfare doing everything they can to get off it and make a better life for themself, but there's probably a lot more not doing anything and settling for mediocrity or less.

You speak as though they are all one. They are a collective of individuals, some who succeed, others who fail. Your question makes me wonder where this resentment of blacks comes from.
What about the Nelson Mandelas, the Oprah Winfreys, the Morgan Freemans, the Toni Morrisons of the world? Don't they count? LOTS of black people succeed, and lots of white people fail.
I'm not sure what you mean when you state so categorically that blacks have "so much handed to them", because it appears to me that many of them begin the game with a distinct handicap. Those who overcome in spite of that are to be applauded! Those who are unable to get ahead of that should not be castigated.

The Black people have one distinguishing feature that they can't hide: their skin. The Irish could assimilate into the rest of the new society because they didn't have the stigma of slavery and the mark of this oppression's main feature all over them.
Also, think of a man who may be perfectly qualified for an opportunity, only to find himself turned down by the sort of person who deems him a failure simply beacuse of their own preconceived ideas of how someone of his race would be expected to perform.Who would enjoy schooling in a system that decides that he really isn't intelligent enough to succeed at school anyway, and seeks to ensure that he does not,by means of constant, unrelenting physical, economic and psychological warfare.
In addition,I'm not aware of any special support that American Blacks are "handed" by the government. I am however painfully aware of the cruel and self righteous attitudes of the kind of people who feel the Blacks of America should be grateful for getting whatever crumbs come their way- "after all,we freed them from slavery, didn't we?What more do they want, actual equality? Come now,we all know that they aren't good enough for anything quite so grand,so we'll just keep on keeping them in their place and frustrate them so much that to lash out would be the only thing for a fellow to do.Of course we can then sit on our high horse and call them wild and all sorts of things besides." Their very skin makes them simple to pick out at interviews and on the street. All they need do is show up on the street and they can be accused of anything at all,hit down by so-called law-enforcement agents and shot dead for "resisting arrest".
They don't get handed anything, they do get alot of rubbish thrown at them in shovelfuls by racist piggie-wigs on a constant basis.
My dear fellow,I do hope I'm not keeping you from your Klan meeting. Oh,and is it true that "The Making of a Nation" has been re-mastered and released on DVD?

I think blacks have internalized the bad things white folks said about them for so long, and begin to believe it....
But apart from that, i give you about 15 seconds before someone reports your question as racist
