For whatever reason, the majority of us just don't get the excitement. I'm not sure if it's because we spend so much of our time on baseball, basketball, and football or what. Soccer is very popular with kids here - it's one of the first team sports they join. But most kids move on to other sports as they get older. This year there was a lot more press about the World Cup. I live in a Michigan university town and the local pubs were filled with foreign visitors watching the game and having a really great time (which made it more fun for the rest of us). Anyway, we love Europe and thanks for asking!
P.S. What is up with all that "slipping" controversy?

I'm American living in England so I had a first hand view at the excitement. I enjoyed the games that I watched. You are getting a mixed bag of answers here. Personally I think there are plenty of American fans and players in the US. I know alot of schools have tried to get more enthusiasm going for the sport. Baseball will always be the number one sport though. Alot will argue about that over American football as well....but baseball is a sport of all ages and gender can enjoy watching.
I think more people need to view soccer/football by taking notice of the athletes playing the game. Everyone wanted to win, of course as with any athlete playing the game he loves. It would be great to see more people respect that instead of making it political....My country vs. Your country type thing.
It is irritating to see answers given to well thought out questions such as this one, roping one opinion into that of many.
I want to add, it is very exciting to watch a world come together like it does during these games......as with the Olympics.

well... I actually have a ritual for every world cup, I wear a lucky shirt, and all sorts of other things, watch mostly every match, the good ones I go to a pub with friends, etc. etc..
but I'm not american.. so i don't think my answer counts. : /
As for this world cup, I thought it was kind of... dissapointing.. I don't know, I thought that the refereeing played a great part into some teams leaving - teams that shouldn't have left.. so I was not "overly happy", and I mean, I'm italian.. but i didn't feel that Italy's win was well deserved, and god forbid I say this: I thought France played a much better game. D:
but I guess I'm still "content" about Italy's win..
edit: I do have to say however that since all my friends are American I can proudly admit I got them into the game, and they seemed to enjoy it. :)

I thought it was awesome and even though soccer isnt as popuular as sports like football and basketball its getting alot more popular every year. And even though the u.s. team is only average they keep getting better drastically and i honestly think that one of these years its gonna be the u.s. winning the world cup. Thier the only team this year that didnt lose to italy and tied them and almost won too if the ball for the second goal hadnt bounced off a players leg on the way and called offsides.

i'm staring at it, I stay interior the u . s . a ., yet i'm no longer American. this could be a super recreation, very severe and exciting. For some reason i'm hoping the U. S. will win, because of the fact i think of it may be super to have a 2nd marvel right this moment, because of the fact the Czechs have been given crushed by way of Ghana. i'm staring at soccer on ABS suitable now, generally you are able to watch the video games on ESPN, a minimum of have been I stay it particularly is.

I loved it! I found the games very exciting, though I was not rooting for the US. Hopefully, I will be able to go to South Africa for the next World Cup.

I LOVED IT!...But I hate the American team...they sucked. They are so ignorant and want to be the only country to play those sorry games like football and baseball. I like the other teams better.

It's interesting. Too bad they don't have something like that for baseball (well, actually they did; that was back in March).
Other than that, I'm a huge baseball and American football fan.

I could honestly care less. I do like soccer but not the American team. I do pull for them just because I am an American but we just suck at it. I would much rather play rugby.
