I have had comcast and directtv, they each have about 10 Spanish channels each. Why is anyone catering to people who should be learning and speaking the official language?
Nobody catered to my ancestors when they came here long ago. They had to learn the hard way.
Besides, Spanish is a savage language and nobody should be speaking it, let alone airing television shows with it spoken.

It's about money. advertisers pay for commericial spots on spanish speaking channels to target a specific audience. if advertisers didn't pay for the spots then the spanish speaking channels wouldn't exist.

You answered your own question in the details. It's catering but it is also money. Comcast and others know that the government caters and so they know there is a market for Spanish language stations. The almighty dollar is the actual answer here. English should be spoken here in the US but I would not say the Spanish language is "Savage".

There are so many Spanish channels because of the "rapidly expanding Hispanic population". True, you would figure that people who have lived in the United States for years would have gotten off their a$$es and learned English. Maybe the Spanish channels are for illegal aliens who are enjoying the benefits of cable tv? What a country!!

I agree that foreigners who come to the US should learn to speak the language but it is ridiculous to say they shouldnt have tv channels in their language to watch. You try living in another country with a different language and missing your country, culture or language. It is very hard and having tv programming in your own language assuages it a little.

I am from India and i speak and write better english than most Americans but it is still nice to have one or 2 tv channels from my homeland.

It depends on where they are produced. In Spain, people are, for the most part "white" (though I loathe that term - I'm pink, thanks). So, Spanish TV stations tend to cast "white" Spaniards. Everywhere else, you would have to go back to the "colonization" (i.e., invasion) of the Americas. To this day, in most Latin American countries there is still a giant social and economic divide between the ancestors of Europeans (mainly of Spanish and Portuguese descent) and the "Indio" population. The "Indios" appear to be looked down on by many in Latin America and the US and that influence is seen in advertising and everywhere in media outlets. The people who make casting decisions are most likely "white," and, since they decide who gets to be on TV, they pick "whites." As for darker-skinned Latinos, it would be the same thing. Basically, these people are racist and make decisions based on the racial ideas set down over 400 years ago.

Maybe because your ancestors had no buying power, no power to sway votes and in general no clout.
