saw this on an episode of beakman's world when i was a kid. was curious if anyone knows the 2 types of solutions he used in this experiment

Glycerol works great for this demo. Could also use a light-weight cooking oil (peanut, sunflower, etc.)

If the solution is something with the refractive index close to that of the beaker, the second one would seem to be invisible. Toluene can work since it has a RI of 1.50, but it would depend of the glass of the beaker (glass RI range around 1.5-1.9).

The fluid was probably nothing more exotic than water.
