WiserAngel has good advice. Also, get a lightning rod for the roof of your home if you don't already have one. And don't be afraid, the chances of your home getting struck by lightning are still quite small and if you stay away from corded electrical devices, toilets, and running water, you should be fine.

Never fear, the engineers of your house, neighbourhood, city and country have ensured that besides the odd appliance burning out due to surges within its components there is adequate grounding to earth of your whole house. Your earth is actually all the water pipes in your house and guess where they all end up?...in the ground.
Just make sure you have candles, unplug the appliances in the wall sockets, stay off the land line phone, stay indoors, cook something now if there is enough time, otherwise cans will suffice, if the electricity trips and cannot be reset then you will have to huddle around the TV with the candle and reinact your favourite show, if the electricity is off for a while then use a cooler box with all the ice out the freezer to save all the frozen goods you have in the freezer... and get off the computer if they said there will be more lightning!..LOL

Unplug all your electronic devices. Do not talk on corded phones. Do not take a shower or run water. Do no use any of your kitchen appliances.
Wait for the storm to pass!
These girls in my town had a bad experience about a month ago. The lightning hit a palm tree nearby, it traveled down the electrical path, hit a light that was plugged in and caught on fire. They were able to put out the fire though. Those things are very rare though.

each and each and every time lightning strikes close by, today start up searching for fires. the nice and comfortable temperature from the bolt ought to instantly ignite timber, if as an celebration it struck a chimney. Overcurrent alongside electric powered wiring ought to arc and start up a hearth contained in the walls or everywhere else on your position, no matter if it did not instantly hit your position. In some circumstances, skinny versatile gasoline tubing on the furnace, range, dryer, and water warmers may arc to floor, concurrently buring a hollow by potential of the tubing and providing a spark to ignite the gasoline because it escapes. So if it strikes close by back, do not huddle up and conceal - aggressively start up searching and smelling for smoke for the subsequent 0.5 hour or so. keep a cellular telephone. Your land lines may also bypass down, and also you may pick a thanks to call for help if mandatory. so a procedures as prevention is worried, there is no longer some thing decrease priced or which will be finished immediately. to authentic guard a house adverse to lightning strikes is an truly in touch procedure, and commonly no longer properly truly worth the price because of the unliklihood of an genuinely strike.

Make sure all your major items that are plugged in are turned off. You don't want a power surge which will cause a lot of items to break. Just stay indoors, away from the windows. Listen to a battery powered radio for tornado watches and warnings.

Unplug really expensive equipment, like computers and televisions...check the weather reports every so often and make sure you have a flash light and a telephone-preferrably, a cell phone, if you have one. Most of the time, nothing bad happens, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Someone else can you a better answer I am sure, but you need to make sure your electric meter is properly grounded. A lightning strike can cause a fire, injuries. Your insurance may pay for your DVD player. One of the worse things that can happen is a house fire. You should contact your electric company and have them come out and make sure you are installed correctly. I am sure it would be no cost to you.

Well for one. Do not believe that lighting does not strike twice in the same place cause it can and has. It's not necessarily metal items that are at risk it's just tall objects. So stay downstairs and away from windows in case the tree should come crashing in.
Best of luck.

is called life. you take a chance everyday it will be your last and someday it will. only thing youre guaranteed in life is death. no one can take that away.best advice is to NOT worry about what you cannot control! be as happy as you can because you may not get another chance.by the way, get a new surge protector! they are only good once
