Look in the yellow pages (NOT Yahoo!) find a family owned and operated one, they are generally the best and fairest prices.

If you are moving just locally, it might be easier to choose, though you should still check with the Better Business Bureau at least. Long haul moving companies have a very bad record. I've had a moving truck full of all my belongings hijacked by a moving company's disgruntled driver to Las Vegas and then abandoned by the side of a road. Another time, a mover promised to ship something in a few days but actually waited about a month till it was convenient for him to find a truck.

I have worked in the moving and stg industry for over 17 years, If this is a local move, my advice would be to go with a company that is nationwide like United or Mayflower.

It's hard to find a good moving service. Cross your fingers, and hope all of your furniture arrives, at the right address, at the right time, in the right city! Pack securely, oops!

Pack and take your valuables yourself: jewelry, expensive clothes, coates, shoes, etc., silverware, dishes, etc.

Anything you can't afford to lose or replace, you should move in your vehicle.

Ask friends for their experiences with local and national moving companies.
