It's true that they CAN make your complexion worse, but it's mostly relative to what kind of product you buy. The trick is to buy products that are "non-comedogenic", which means that they can't clog your pores. Also, if you have oily skin, shop for oil-free products. There's a fairly large selection of stuff out there, from lots of different manufacturers, you just need to read the labels.

I am a cosmetologist, that question depends on how you use it. If you are only applying a foundation or powder than yes, it can clog your pores and cause skin problems. The correct way to apply a foundation is AFTER you have cleansed the skin and applied a TONER or ASTRINGENT, depending on your skin type. Toner is higher in alcohol and made for oily skin while an astringent is more gentle and formulated for normal to dry skin. Both serve the purpose of closing the pores, and sealing the skin. That is the key to makeup, if you cleanse and take care of your skin, after closing the pores you can safely apply foundation without it causing skin irritation. Powder, blush or any other makeup is applied over the foundation, so it does not directly affect the pores of the skin. Two more things to keep in mind, moderation, don't cake on makeup so your skin can't breathe. Besides that is looks tacky. And fresh makeup is best, you should only use a makeup product for 6 months to a year, depending on what it is. Things that contact the eyes or lips should be discarded sooner because they are in a direct opening and can cause greater infections. Sharing makeup can pose risks also, it can spread bacteria, which may result in irritation, infections and more.

Not entirely. They don't ruin the skin, but some don't exactly help it to become healthier either. Some of these items clog poors and contain oil, which is bad. This may cause you to breakout. Make sure to buy only oil-free products. Bronzer, on the other hand, is usually bad because most of it dyes the skin in one way or another. This may cause an fake unhealthy looking color. Only buy spray-ons that come off in the shower. Facial powder is usually fine on any skin, unless you're allergic to it. you have to keep in mind that most of these products aren't hypo-allergenic. One way to keep your skin looking great after using these products is to use facial cleansers and tones after. Also, always make sure to wash these products off at the end of the day. Also, wash your face in the morning and before bed for healthy skin everyday. Good luck and good question!

Foundation can make your skin worse if you don't wash it off of your face! Try using a foundation for your skin type and definitely try not to touch your blemishes. The oils on your hands tend to make the blemishes worse!
Use a good face soap (I really like Velocity from Mary Kay) and you won't have to worry about your foundation making your blemishes worse.

well considering how many times i ahve been to the dermotoligist for this specific problem, i wouldnt say i am an expert, but i do know what i am talking about from firsthand experience. putting all of that stuff on your face is not good when you have acne because it clogs your pores. when you have acne you arent giving it any room to breathe or dry out. what you want, if you are going to use that stuff is oil free foundation, etc and make sure that you ALWAYS wash it off your face with a good cleanser. i used to use mac and i broke out pretty bad because it was a thick make-up. now i use clinique and my face is fine. you just dont want heavy foundation if you have acne prone skin. and make sure you always moisturize.

Hrmm this is something that I always thought to be true, but when I Googled it, all I could find were sites offering products to use while one has blemishes. Another part of the cosmetic conspiracy against women and their pocket books.(heh)
I would assume that it is true though, being that clogged pores often lead to pimples, black heads, et al. Anything that you apply to your face is going into these pores.
Below are some sites that may offer insight, as well as one that parodies the whole idea.

clogging up your pores with too much makeup can cause your skin to blemish or dry out... A little is ok, just don't overdo it. Always look after your skin and body with gentle cleansing and moisturizing, a healthy diet, exercise and no smoking or other substance abuse. It will help you look good now and long into your future.

a lot of people think that those products, (blush, foundation, and powder) are used to cover over pimples, or facial bumps. but thats not what they are for. those products are to give your skin a glow, and even out skin tones. not to cover over facial imperfections. i always see women applying a whole bunch of foundation trying cover over their pimples, and they walk around looking like a ghost.

It doesn't make blemishes worse. As long as you buy hypoallergenic makeup. This kind of makeup allows your pores to breathe.
