well there are a few differences between freshwater and cultured pearls first and most obvious is that the freshwater pearls come from freshwater and cultured comes from salt water usually an ocean. freshwater is cheaper because the host can grow more than one pearl at a time and they grow faster causing matching pearls quickly (because if they come from the same host they will all come out the same color) also because of the speed of growth most freshwater pearls come out anywhere from very misshapen to perfectly round a jeweler can not make a pearl more round it comes out of the shell that way also fresh water come in a larger variety of colors natural as well as dyed. cultured saltwater pearls are more expensive usually because they can only grow one pearl per host and take longer to grow and the care taking of the pearls by the people who own them is much more difficult because of the colder ocean temperatures also saltwater pearls come in a variety of natural and dyed colors but are not as frequently dyed saltwater and freshwater pearls are priced by color-weather it is natural or dyed, the shape -how round it is, the inclusions- how many and how obvious they are, and nacre(the thin pearlescent layers that make a pearl)- how thick or how many layers there are (the longer a pearl stays in the host the more layers most saltwater pearls stay anywhere from 2-10 although there has been instances of longer) freshwater and saltwater pearls are made from the same substance, nacre, they will both carry the same inclusions banding of color indention's or bumps although freshwater does seem to carry more of the inclusions. there is much more information but I'm going to cut this short you can ask your local jewelers if you need more information or ask here again i hope this answers your question

Freshwater pearls are smaller seed shaped and slightly bumpy...South pacific cultured pearls are round and smooth..both have the same pearl lustre..which is caused by something called Nacre...Which is..what the mollusk uses to keep the shell tough.

Freshwater pearls are cheap and not very round. jewelers design them to "look round" on a necklace or bracelet. Cultured pearls are much more expensive and almost perfectly round

Fresh water pearls tend to be baroque in shape. Cultured pearls are more rare and costly and generally more round.
