There are many different theories out there on things that will cause you to go into labor. Let me look a few of the medically proven ones up for you. (As opposed to some of the old-wives tales you're bound to hear.) Keep in mind that none of these are guaranteed to work 100% of the time. They are simply the most effective means.

According to "What to Expect When You're Expecting", one method is nipple stimulation. This is what the book had to say,
"One study showed that women who, from 39 weeks on, stimulated their nipples for three hours or more daily were much less likely to carry past their due dates. In the study women stimulated the nipple, areola, and breast with the balls of their fingertips, fifteen minutes a breast, alternating breasts, for one hour three times a day. Creams or lotions were optional as was a husband's help. The problem is that not only is this technique time and energy consuming, but without careful medical supervision, it can be risky. It can produce very strong contractions (much as oxytocin can), which could lead to trouble. So do not try this technique unless your practitioner recommends it."

Another method is to have sex. It is unlikely that this will induce premature labor in a normal pregancy, but you should talk to your doctor first, in case of other risk factors (such as multiple fetuses). Normally this will work only if the pregancy is ripe for labor to begin anyway, but it can be a great way to get things on track and moving along. Semen contains prostaglandin, which is an irritant that helps spawn the beginning of labor in certain cases. Once again, check with your doctor before engaging in intercourse this late in the pregnancy.

A third method is medical induction of labor. This method should only be used in a case of medical necessity for either your or the baby's health, as is the case in an overdue pregnancy or if there are complications. The most common methods of medical induction are a Pitocin drip and the manual bursting of your bag of water. Often labor can be spawned simply by the doctor manually popping the bag of waters. If this is not the case, usually a Pitocin (synthesized oxytocin, the hormone that makes contractions occur) drip is administered. Once again, these methods are used only in the case of medical neccesity.

Keep in mind that your body's instincts are very powerful. Your body and your baby know best when they are prepared for birth. In the case of necessary induction, your doctor will know what to do. Trust your body. It was built specifically for this wonderful task. Rarely do you need to do anything to stimulate labor. Your body will do it on its own.

Congratulations and Good luck!

Walking and sex are probably the only things, but the truth is that if your body doesn't feel like going into labor, not even pitocin will work sometimes. The pitocin not working is rare, though. Aside from a medical induction, just try what I've already mentioned. Semen contains proglastins that help to ripen the cervix, and for some reason walking helps. I'm not sure why. But it's one of the reasons women at risk for preterm labor get put on bedrest or modified bedrest.

I know this going to sound old fashioned and I would consult with my OB if I were you but this worked for me 4 times I was over due with each of my children, all healthy by the way.

I took 2 oz of Castor oil and then went for a walk, (don't get too far from home or a bathroom this stuff works fast).

For something a little less drastic you could go for a long walk without the Castor oil. Make daddy walk with you.

Good Luck

The old wives tale is to have sex!

What worked for me was a procedure that my OB performed called stripping the membrane. Basically he tried to stretch my cervix with his fingers. I went into labor about an hour after the procedure.

castor oil or nipple stimulation causes a release of your natural oxytocin and then will start uterine contractions.

You could also use olive oil instead of Castor oil.
