My grandfather was a rancher, raising cattle, and my husband was a farmer, growing alfalfa and wheat.
The difference is a rancher raises livestock for consumption and/or it's by-products, and at times also grows the feed for them.
A farmer works with the soil, growing crops for both people and animals.
Usually farmers have some livestock, but not to the extent that a rancher does.
I call our place a ranch--because I am raising kids!

A ranch's main purpose is to 'grow' livestock - usually cattle, sheep or horses. A farm's main purpose is to grow plants (vegetables, fruit, flax, etc); farms will often have some livestock, but the fields are full of plants growing, not animals grazing.

It's all in the number of acres & where you live. Ranches are typically out west where they have thousands of acres of land-- and of course all the horses & cattle you could want to go on it! Ranchers usually plant very few acres of crops because a lot of them are in a hill area & planting crops on steep ground is not smart!
