I know a woman capenter and joiner. When she has to buy stuff in a certain hardware store, she has to pretend to the male assistant that she doesn't know the names of nails and screws etc. because if she showed her knowledge which is extensive including all the wood joints etc, he will give her a hard time and she is in a hurry. I said she should speak to the owner.

I'm not into dumb blondes. I'd rather go out with someone intelligent.

I don't think all men are frightened. I think that particular man is extremely insecure and intimidated by a woman who is an expert in a traditionally male field. It's too bad, he's really missing out and sad that she has to perpetuate the stereotype of the mechanically-challenged woman.

Personally, my husband is an office worker in sales and I work in a factory. I make more than him and when anything needs to be put together, he's useless in that way. There are many other things that I love him for, but I am definitely the more mechanically inclined one in the relationship.

I grew up with a carpenter father and his father was in sales, so I guess our environments have a lot to do with these things.

LOL...I'm sure all males are frightened about something, but if it's your friend with the extensive knowledge in carpentry....I'm not so sure about that. LOL
Most macho men are turned off by women who can do alot of the masculine things they can. I wouldn't say the person is scared, but maybe just doesn't show much kindly interest in her. In absolute truth, he's probably treating her the way he treats other guys. ROFL

She shouldn't act stupid when she's buying her supplies...that just fuels the stereotype that women don't know anything about her profession. Why not impress them with her knowledge? If they give her a hard time...she should confront them on it and telll them she's in a hurry and doesn't have time for games.

That isn't males being frightened, that is your friend being frightened, feeling that she needs to act dumb just because she is a woman, if she believes she is stupid perhaps then she should ask herself why she feels the need to dumb-down to get respect from men...because it certainly isn't respect, and she will not get respect if she goes through life acting in this way.

well a lot of the time the shop assistant doesn't know what you are talking about! If you get technical with them; so your friend is maybe helping them out some, by a bit of kiddology.

The male is not showing fear should he ridicule her for her knowledge: he is just showing he's a prize prat!!

Me thinks one may presume to much though!!

She should just go in and order the things that she needs.... if he is too slow or ignorant she should change her suppler or complain to the manager!!!

Maybe she should go to the counter & ask for four candles, that might make him laugh and break the ice between them.

Maybe he thinks she's trying to be a know-it-all and doesn't realise that it is actually her profession.
She doesn't tend to question his advice ("are you sure...?") does she, 'cos I've noticed this upsets some experts.

I respect and admire women like her. I wish more women would know such things. I think she is assuming that he is giving her a hard time. If he is, then he is a jerk. Some people like that even give men a hard time. So there.

Just be herself. Revealing her knowledge should make work easier for the male assistant!

I would suggest switching to another hardware store. Vote with your feet, and be sure to let management know you're taking your business elsewhere.
