I just went through this. They do a biopsy first to find out if you have pre-cancerous cells and what level they are. If you have levels 2 and 3 then you go in and have a LEEP or coneospasy.
The virus HVP (which about 80% of women have) will show a abnormal pap. Some women may never develope pre-cancerous cells. I was told I only had level 1 and 2 and that I could just come back for another biopsy or have the LEEP. I decided to have the LEEP done and they found level 3.
the procedure is not that bad. And I and my doctor are glad I made the dession I made.
After having a LEEP you have to go for follow ups every 3 months then after a year if you don't have a reacurrence then you only have to go for regular paps. What ever they find don't just let it go because you are scared it really is not that bad. Get it taken care of right away and trust your instinct.
Good Luck.

Yes, I had an abnormal pap. It was right after the birth of my daughter. They had me wait 3 months and take another pap, which came back normal. Later they told me it could have been an indication of HPV, but it was never confirmed and never happened again.

Yes, I did and it was pre-cancerous. I was told I would need pap smears every 6 months. But a few years later I had a partial hysterectomy and they removed my cervix too.

Yep. I had to get a colposcopy, which hurt a little bit, and get a pap smear every six months for two years.
My results did not show cancer or pre-cancer.

Yes.. every six months for 2 years and then they went back to noraml. I just had to be tested more often (to look for changes) but then they got fine again without ever changing for the worse.
