I press all the buttons but it doesn't do anything, and I made sure it wasn't on hold or anything. Any ideas why it does this? And is there away to fix it then, other than to wait until it runs out of battery power and turns off itself?

lol I had the same problem, press and hold, the menu button and middle button, this is the restart command for the Ipod, also, if it ever shuts off after you charge it, like just after, try warming it up^_^

if none of those other things work, you might have to send it in for a battery repair, which i recently did..havent gotten it back now.. its been about 2 weeks but it better return safe and sound.
