I've used both in the past but the first thing that I bought was a laptop computer so that I could take it with me when I left home and went to my college classes. For you, it would depend on what you wanted to use it for. From the sound of your question, you don't really have to use it on the go for business reasons or any other kind of work. If you want it mainly so that your son can use it and play video games on it, then it probably is best that you go with your first thought and get a PC. If you were to look at a PC and a laptop of the same price, you would notice that the PC would have more memory and a faster processor speed than the laptop at the same price. If you don't need a laptop so that you could do work on it while on the go, then getting the PC would definately be a better buy (plus, a more powerful PC would be better equiped to support all the games and gaming software that you would need). In other words, you would be getting more for your money if you bought the PC instead of the laptop... :-)

It can do pretty much anything a desktop can do if you get it with all the options. Depending on your sons age though, consider that kids tend to ride things a little harder than the grown ups that pay for them. If your son breaks the keyboard on a desktop, you pay less than $20.00, unplug the old, plug in the new and you are done. If the keyboard on a laptop gets broken, you are looking at an expensive repair if the company decides that it is not normal wear and tear.

A laptop is smaller than a desktop and will cost you more, as compressed technology is more costly. They are more fragile and offer less screen estate, unless you get a monitor for it. I would recommend you to only get a laptop if you are going to take it out of the house or need to move it around. You get much more for your money when getting a desktop.

I suggest you take a look on the Dell website and compare specs vs price. Write a list of what you need the new machine for and then decide.

PC's don't freeze up as much and usually are faster than laptops; I had a laptop that died on me but PC's usually don't die; at least not the new ones. So the only advantage of a laptop is you can carry it around and go to Starbucks to surf the net.

A PC can be upgraded a lot easier and they're a LOT cheaper. Laptops are great for taking anywhere, but their batteries are expensive and die after about a year. If you've got cash to burn, a laptop is great, but if you're trying to stretch your dollar, stick with a PC.

Laptop versus Tower:

Laptop is very good for moving around and going places but is near impossible to upgrade without buying a new laptop.
The tower on the other hand is very easy to upgrade and much cheaper but you loose the versitility of the laptop.

Get both, give the tower to your son and keep the laptop to yourself.

A PC is good if you plan on using it mostly in one place. PCs are more powerful and cost less. They are also easier to upgrade.

Laptops are good if you plan to use the computer in a lot of places. They are more expensive and not as powerful. They also are hard to upgrade and games are harder to play as the PC has more powerful graphics cards available.

The main advantage of a laptop over a PC is portability. You can take it anywhere and use it. However, a PC is generally going to be 'faster.'

The biggest advantage with laptop is the mobility, you can move it without too much hassle. PC is a lot more powerful for the same amount of money.

A laptop is basiclly the same as a PC, but you can take it anywhere, it has a battery and can get wi-fi access (Well, a desktop can too but it has to be configured) Your son can play games on the laptop too if he wanted. :)

Hope this helps!
