I'm graduating from High School in May of 2007, and I definitely know where I'm going to college. I'm very interested in languages (I am almost fluent in German, and I know a little Spanish and Japanese), and I'm pretty sure I'm going to major in at least 2 languages. The problem is that I don't know anything about getting jobs with a language degree...I don't know how easy or difficult it is to get a job as an interpreter or a translator, and I want to know how "valuable" I would really be with a masters or a p.h.d. in 2 languages. Are there very many people out there who can boast being able to speak 3 languages fluently? What is the job market like for interpreters and translators?

I only speak English, Russian and German, but my wife works part-time translating CD booklets for an international music publishing firm. She speaks 5 languages fluently,

*German
*English
*Itallian
*French
*Hebrew

Her degree is in English. She is not officially certified as a translator. It's a tough business to get into- lots of competition. Luckily, we had an inside connection. You don't necessarily need to be officially certified or have a masters degree to translate- Perhaps you will be more marketable with these credentials though.

In this day of age English is pretty much the standard language for the world and most businesses in other countries do know it. So I am not sure what kind of job you would be able to find with this. The only thing comes to mind is if somehow you get eh position of a us council in the country, which language you are going to master, so it would be easier to talk to the people there.

You can work as a freelance translator. With the right qualifications, a great web site and smart advertisement you could be making good money, especially if you can launch a partnership with a large corporation. If you work well and they like it, they will always give you plenty work.
I don't know about the interpretation market.

I don't know about that job market, but if you are at all interested in teaching that broadens your options.
