hens can lay eggs without daddy, but they won't hatch unless they mate. The eggs at the store are not fertile, the chicken just layed them without mating. I used to have pet chickens, they are cool by the way.

no, chickens produce the egg, even if it never gets fertilized. A hen will lay an egg, about every second day for about a year and then taper off to nothing. The eggs you get at the supermarket are laid by hens that have never seen a rooster. However, if you want to produce more chickens, you need a rooster, since an unfertilized egg will not hatch

No. Similarly, many reptiles lay unfertilized eggs. Reptiles and birds are cousins on the evolution tree. Fish also lay eggs without mating...fertilization takes place outside the body in many species. If you want to prove this, buy a dozen eggs from your grocery store and try to hatch them. HOWEVER, one time when I was kid, my mother was making breakfast. I heard her scream to high heaven. I ran downstairs to see what was wrong. She was making French toast. She had cracked open an egg and there was an almost fully formed chick in it. It freaked her out. Have no idea how a rooster got into that hen house, but obviously that chicken did not use protection.

Female chickens lay eggs without a mate just as female humans give off an egg each month. When an egg is fertilized we have a chick just as when an egg is fertilized in a women, we have a human baby.

No. A chicken needs to mate in order to produce a new chick in the egg.

back in the 1940s we used to feed the chickens oyster shells from the farm store to make strong egg shells. Eggs used to come in white, brown and blue. Blue eggs used to come from fancy chickens. a lone hen can lay eggs so 2 are not needed

No, just as female humans "lay" unfertilized egg/s (monthly), chickens lay eggs that are infertile. You can buy fertilized chicken eggs, but there's a weird little red spot in them (embryo) and most people, at least in the US, don't find them appetizing.
Then there's "balut" (sp?) from the Phillipines, but maybe someone from there would care to comment.

A hen will lay eggs no matter what. It needs a roster to fertilize the eggs. In other words, you need a roster to get chicks.

No a hen does not need to mate to lay eggs. If you have a hen and a rooster (girl and boy) you must watch the rooster, if he is mean to the hen, she will keep her eggs inside of her, if they are fertile, to keep the abusive rooster away from her chicks. She will eventually 'explode' trying to keep all of them inside of her!
